I need help identifying a plant I purchased so I know if I can put it outside or if its an inside plant?

I bought this little plant at the local grocery store and it came with nothing letting me know what kind of plant it was or how to care for it. I need to know a little about it so I am hoping for some help. The plant is light green and looks similar to a hen and chick but only shape wise and the fact it seems to be growing babies. The leaves are rounded and thicker with small red pointed tips and they seem water filled. It also has some stems growing off it with clusters of orange flower like buds. The whole plant has a waxy feel to it also. If anyone can help me figure out what plant this is it would be great! Thanks so much!

I need help identifying a plant I purchased so I know if I can put it outside or if its an inside plant?
do you see it here?....maybe the fourth picture?....

edit.... here%26#039;s some more pictures with hens and chicks type plants in bloom... maybe you%26#039;ll see your flower.... especially look at the picture%26#039;s website where there%26#039;s a whole lot of plants on one picture!.... lots of luck finding it!..

http://images.google.com/images?q=hens+a...

without identifying it, the answer to the question is yes, it can go outside if it%26#039;s a hen/chick.... sunny, slightly dry spot, protected alittle from cold winds in winter.... a strawberry pot is ideal.... since you can move it around... or a %26#039;desert%26#039; potted garden like this one...

http://www.bestgardening.com/bgc/images-...

having them in a moveable pot is nice cuz you can put them in a more protected area if you need to, like in a colder region... mine here in zone 7 stay outside all year in the same spot, no problem.....
Reply:Could be a Haworthia of sorts and also an echeveria. Try those might help. More likely echeveria
Reply:Sounds like a goldfish plant. It gets its name, because of the shape and color of the little (about 1 inch) orange flowers it produces.

If so, it lives indoors with indirect light and prefers humid conditions. It doesn%26#039;t like overwatering. So, let the soil dry out a bit between waterings. It can%26#039;t really wilt, because the leaves are waxy and retain the water.

I planted one outdoors once and it died within a few months. So, definitely keep it indoors.

Is it too early to plant spring-flowering bulbs?

I just purchased several types of bulbs (tulips, allium, muscari)...I live in Central Ohio and it%26#039;s been in the 90s here lately...is it too warm to plant these bulbs? Should I wait until next month? Also, is it better to plant bulbs after a rain or when the ground is dry? We just bought our first house and I know nothing about landscaping...thank you!

Is it too early to plant spring-flowering bulbs?
If you%26#039;ve got them in hand, stick %26#039;em in the ground. You may have to water before digging... try watering the night before you intend to dig.

Most of our spring bulbs are native to the mountains of the middle east... they%26#039;re programmed to handle hot and dry summers. They%26#039;re just going to sit there until the autumn rains, and start putting out roots then. They%26#039;ll bloom, then sit there through next summer%26#039;s heat and drought and then put out roots in the fall again.

If you don%26#039;t want to plant them now, put them someplace cool and semi-moist (like the basement or the vegetable crisper of the refrigerator). THey%26#039;ll use up less of their stored %26quot;food%26quot; reserves that way, and you%26#039;ll have a better chance at bigger blooms next spring. Get them in the ground by late November or so where you are, though. And don%26#039;t plant them where they%26#039;re going to stand in soggy soil most of the time... they like soil that drains.
Reply:That%26#039;s definitely too warm; you need to wait until the soil is going to stay cool at night before you plant them. If they get warm during the day, they%26#039;ll start to sprout, and chances are good that they couldn%26#039;t regain the energy and food they lose before they go dormant, and wouldn%26#039;t bloom at all next spring. I%26#039;d suggest waiting at least a month if you are in the northern tier of states in the U.S., and even longer (like November) if you are in the southern U.S. You might want to check with a nursery in your area to find out the times that they recommend planting bulbs; until then, keep them in your refrigerator.

It%26#039;s easier to plant bulbs when the ground is dry; the bulbs don%26#039;t care as long as it%26#039;s chilly enough to keep them dormant.

Happy gardening!
Reply:In central ohio plant in oct, nov., and in early dec. if ground is workable. Don%26#039;t plant in very wet area as bulbs will rot.
Reply:at the end of the month should work out great and it doesnt have to be wet, theyre going to sleep anyway for winter good luck!
Reply:Spring flowering bulbs should be planted in the fall...usually from September on. Even if it is warm where you are, plant them now to give them a good head start. If the nurseries in your area are selling bulbs now, then it is certainly the time to plant them. It does not matter if it is wet or dry outside when planting bulbs. What DOES matter is that you use bone meal when planting those bulbs. This will get the roots going. I also use bulb dust when planting. It contains an insecticide and fungicide. It ensures that your bulbs won%26#039;t get damaged by fungus, molds or insects. As a landscaper, I plant thousands of bulbs and I always use bone meal and bulb dust and I have had great success!

Reply:%26quot;Plant tulip bulbs in fall, 6 to 8 weeks before a hard frost is expected and when soils are below 60 degrees F.%26quot;

http://www.kidsgardeningstore.com/tulip....

In Ohio, October is a great time to plant spring-flowering bulbs. The soil temperatures in early fall are ideal for good root development. However, %26quot;some bulbs like tulips may emerge in the fall if they are planted in September before the soil temperatures begin to cool.%26quot;

http://www.ipm.iastate.edu/ipm/hortnews/...

Purchase bulbs while supplies are good during Sept. or October, but wait to plant until the soil temperature at planting depth stays below 60 °F.

http://hgic.clemson.edu/factsheets/HGIC1...

The soil should be fertile and well drained. Add some compost to ensure dependable blooms for the spring and every spring thereafter. Plant when the soil is dry. When the rain comes after planting, it should be sufficient. Bulbs planted in wet sites will often be short-lived.

In colder climates, %26quot; They will have more time to begin growing roots if planted before mid-November.%26quot;

http://www.gardening.about.com/od/flower...

Good luck! Hope this is helpful. I%26#039;m from Ohio, too :) I plant my bulbs from Oct to mid November.
Reply:you can plant them right away if you have time to do it...the stores don%26#039;t usually start selling bulbs till it is safe to plant them...especially if they guarantee growth for next year...planting in a dry ground is ok because they aren%26#039;t going to grow till next year...you can water after you get them planted to settle them in, but if you live in a rainy area, you don%26#039;t have to do that...you can look forward to lots of beauty next year...

Has anyone ever purchased plants from Bluestone Perennials?

1. How small are the perennials?

2. How long before they grow?

3. Were you happy with the product?

4. Would you recommend starting a flower bed with Bluestone Perennials?

Has anyone ever purchased plants from Bluestone Perennials?
OMG, YES! this is one of the greatest compinies out there! i got my orders in the other day and they were shipped with the upmost care and the plants looked outstanding, healthy, growing, and ready to be planted! they give u everything u need too; plant food, instructions on what to do with ur new plants... the whole nine (and a half) yards! they%26#039;ll be growing when u get them! i%26#039;ve got alot of plants in the mail b-4 and no one made me happier. shop and grow with confidence! two thumbs up.....way up!

I've recently purchased a house with a climbing rose plant. It has not been maintained for some time. There

are at least 3 long woody branches (about 15 ft.in length) which have flowered this summer. I%26#039;d like to get it under control but I%26#039;m not sure how to trim (or should I say cut back) woody branches without ruining the plant. Any advice?

I%26#039;ve recently purchased a house with a climbing rose plant. It has not been maintained for some time. There
It is pretty hard to harm a climbing rose. You can be pretty aggressive with your pruning and not harm the basic plant.

Most rose bushes are pruned in mid February or so. This lets the bush put out new growth after most of the cold weather. If you prune in the fall, you run the risk of having some new growth that will freeze during the winter.

When can i start planting my flower seeds?

I live in British Columbia Canada and am wondering when is the best time to start planting the seed packages i have purchased...on the package it says after the last frost...but when is that?

When can i start planting my flower seeds?
Depends on where in British Columbia you are. Check the chart on this page:

http://www.victoryseeds.com/frost/bc.htm...

Depending on the seed, you can start them inside in a sunny, south-facing window 4-6 weeks before the last frost date, and then transplant the seedlings out then. But some flowers don%26#039;t like being transplanted and prefer being sown where they will grow. The package should mention it if starting inside is an option.
Reply:You really need to know which zone you are in. Also notice that you may have many different micro-climates in your yard. Take a walk around your yard and notice the difference in sun exposure and temps at various times of the day. The more sun, the warmer the temps, the less chance of frost.
Reply:BC has more than one hardiness zone, so the frost date is different in different spots. Google the name of the nearest large city and the words %26quot;frost date%26quot; and see what comes up. Good luck!
Reply:M ay 24th.

How do I get my passion flower vine to bloom?

I purchased it on eBay a couple of yrs. ago %26amp; planted it in my back yard in bright Texas sun, but it has never bloomed. They grow wild in direct sun in the fields here.

How do I get my passion flower vine to bloom?
Maybe it takes a good 2 years to establish the root system. Some things will not bloom the first and sometimes even second year. After 2 bloom seasons you should see something...
Reply:I don%26#039;t know, but try looking on Burpees
Reply:In the spring, feed your passion flower vine with a bloomer, such as Miracle Gro 15-30-15. There is another food that will force it into bloom, such as 9-52-12. Make sure the middle number is higher than the other two.

I am in chicago and have purchased some tulip bulbs like fringed beauty triumph tulip, darwin hybrid tulip whic

are recommended for planting in fall for spring to midseason flowering. Can anyone guide me if i palnt it now in home for spring flowering, would they bloom?

Also whether these tulips are perrenial or not?

Any other suggestion welcome

I am in chicago and have purchased some tulip bulbs like fringed beauty triumph tulip, darwin hybrid tulip whic
All excellent answers so far. Yes, tulips are best planted in the fall. (That is actually when they set roots.) Still, experiment a little and do not give up hope for this spring. And yes, tulips are perennial bulb plants.

The original tulips (wildflowers) came from Central Asia. The Turks were the first to cultivate them. A little history:

http://www.holland.nl/uk/holland/sights/...

Good luck.
Reply:I don%26#039;t think if you plant them they will bloom yet this spring. They need a little time and a little cold. You should be able to plant them and have them come up _next_ spring.

Your best bet is just plant them and see what they do. Plants are tough.

Your biggest problem is going to be keeping them from rotting in the ground. When you get them in the ground, I would make sure you have plenty of good drainage (add sand is what I always do) and then not water them too much. If they sit dormant in water, they will rot.

If they are happy, yes, tulips will come back every year.
Reply:they may not bloom this season if planted now, but you could still plant them. if you want to, you can refridgerate them for 4 weeks minimum and plant them late*. this is known as %26quot;forcing%26quot; and is how most florists can provide bulb flowers throughout the year. i%26#039;ve done this at home and %26#039;forced%26#039; daffodils indoors just after Christmas.

all bulb flowers are perrenial and will make %26#039;babies%26#039; that can be separated and made into new plants.

*it would be an interesting touch to your garden to have tulips in july!
Reply:These great plants need to be planted in the fall. When it gets cold enough, they will appear and the hormones signal the plant to bloom. Chicago is an excellent place for this. Where I live, sometimes it doesn%26#039;t get cold enough and just leaves will grow. You can wrap them in newspaper and put them inside your refrigerator but not the freezer for 8 weeks and you can force bloom them in pots if you like and then put them in the ground in the fall. The newspaper is porous and they won%26#039;t rot with moisture. If you plant them in the fall, they will come back and may multiply for 10 years or even longer. When they die back leave the brown leaves alone because it is the leaves that feed the bulb for the next season. Most people throw the leaves away by mistake. Have fun with these. They are easy to grow and really beautiful.

Just purchased a "BUTTERFLY BUSH"~does it GROW FAST???

And is it %26#039;easy care%26#039;

---- looked so gorgeous in the ad~DEEP purple, grows like 10 in. flower(s) off of about 4 foot plant, and supposedly is a butterfly magnet

is it fast growing??

[hope so]

Just purchased a %26quot;BUTTERFLY BUSH%26quot;~does it GROW FAST???
Provided you have the plant in an open area with room to grow it is a tremendous planting. Prune only those growths that reach the ground. In the early fall prune to reduce insects by elimininating any foliage from ground level to about six inches from ground level.

This plant will grow with amazing vigor and spread. It is intended to be a specimen or non-foundation planting. It needs room to grow and survive. Two or three, if you have the space, make a wonderful display in mid to late summer.

Planted with a background (the three) with two white pines,

or interplanted with Redtwig Dogwoods (these in the back) will give you what you want.

Keep the planting as far away from your home to both accomodate and attract the butterfly. Prune only after the flowers have begun to wilt. This is generally late summer.

A hard pruning, half removal, is recommended each third year. You do this in Late Fall and remove all dead wood and shape the plant to belong to your garden.

If you wish to have this plant in a small or planter type garden, you have spent unwisely. This will attract both the butterfly and bees. One is wanted, the other, kind of a problem.

Keep in mind there are no wrong plants just a wrong place for them. A weed is nothing more than any plant we do not want in that place. Such may be your dilema.

If the planting is away from the house and spreading allow it to grow. Feed it with a 10-10-10-and mineral granular fert every season (Early Spring /St Pats, Mothers Day, Labor Day, and Halloween.) Again, prune the flowering branches only after they have wilted in season.

Combine this plant with other similar Butterfly and find youself in amazement in the attraction. I used a combination in a backyard and found more compliments from those bushes than any of the hundred we had supplied.

Good Luck with the plant, it is hardy (taken care of well),

and will give you years of both joy and maintenance.
Reply:WOW!! You must have gotten a dwarf variatie! Mine is about 10feet tall and 5 feet wide! Yes they do grow fast .taht is if you give it all of the sun and water that it needs!!
Reply:butterfly bushes grow very fast.so much so that here in Wa. state, they are being considered for a noxious weed.
Reply:Yes they grow fast. I have 3 in my yard. I read recently that you should cut them down to about 24%26quot; in late winter when they are dormant and they will grow new growth in the spring. BTW, yes they attract butterflies and hummingbirds
Reply:yes it is very easy and very fast to grow you get 2 shade flowers dark and light
Reply:it takes about two weeks or so to get established, but once it does... it takes off like a weed! i%26#039;ve had mine in the ground for about a month and a half.. and it%26#039;s grown about three feet larger then it was and it%26#039;s covered in blooms! no fertilizer needed til next spring! water once (deeply) a week! enjoy the butterflies and bees! very pretty
Reply:Yea, these grow pretty fast and get a bit bushier every year. I can%26#039;t think of anything special to add. They are very easy. Just give them some sun and water and you will have a butterfly buffet. Enjoy.

How to prepare soil for gardening shrubs in a flower bed?

I recently purchased some organic compost not realizing that it was inorganic compost that I really wanted. So when I got home I mixed the organic compost I had just purchased with the inorganic compost i had layed out a week before. So my question was, what will happen when these two types of compost are mixed? Is my soil ruined because of this careless mistake or can I still salvage my soil? The reason I started with the inorganic compost was because I live in the Southwestern part of Texas where the soil is clay like and I was advised to use the inorganic type to soften the soil. Any suggestions out there or any similar issues any one has encountered?

How to prepare soil for gardening shrubs in a flower bed?
Any type of soil can be improved with the addition of organic matter, unless you are one of the few who have perfect soil. The organic will rot and add water retaining humus to your soil, the inorganic will not rot and serve to help aerate. If you have clay soil, you NEED to add organic matter, period. Sand also helps as a cheap inorganic. One question.....compost is rotting ORGANIC material. I have never heard of inorganic COMPOST.
Reply:This won%26#039;t harm your soil, though it wouldn%26#039;t allow it to be certified as organic, if you were a farmer/grower etc.

As time continues, the organic matter will continue to improve your soil still further, and you can add more as a mulch. It really pays to improve the soil as much as you can before planting, as once planted, you will have limited opportunity to really get below root level again! You%26#039;ll need the help of worms to do that:though they%26#039;ll love organic matter added to the soil surface, and take it downwards.

Dig and prepare the holes as well as you can - add bone-meal if possible, another organic fertilizer, before planting.
Reply:i don%26#039;t think the mixing of compost will do harm. but a tip for compost is dig up the soil first. douse it with water. put a thick layer of dried grass clippings on top of the dug up patch. water that to. put dead leaves on top of that. put things that are organic from there on out. (bad fruit, melon skin, orange rine, etc.) and make sure to cover it with a fresh layer of dried leaves from then one. leave it for a few weeks. your soil show be warm moist, nutritious, and good for plants by the end. I did this and I also live in texas.. and it was during the winter too :D.
Reply:I%26#039;ve never heard about using inorganic over organic. I do know that if you are planting a shrub or tree the roots are bound to go deep and encounter your natural soil anyway. I suggest that when you dig the hole for your shrubs that you mix the better soil with your natural soil about half and half so that the roots will be more inclined to grow out into the soil instead of trying to stay within the better soil and becoming sort of root bound making the plant weak. be sure to dig the hole twice as big as the rootball. As for flowers-If you feel that the soil is still to hard try adding a little sand to it or leaves from your yard that have turned brown-try mulching the leaves down with a lawnmower first to make the pieces smaller.Something else you might try adding to your soil is cotton bur compost-you can also use this as a mulch-it will help the soil by also adding nutrients as it breaks down further.

Trouble with Corymbia Ficofolias (Flowering Red Gums)?

About a month ago I purchased 4 of these trees, 2 are about 5 feet tall, while the other two are about a foot tall. I dug the holes 2-3 times the size of the root balls and planted the trees using an organic potting mix and watered in well. I watered the trees about 2-3 times per week and used miraclegrow about once every 2 weeks. After about a week after planting, the leaves on the trees started turning a greyish color and became very dry and brittle. I live in S.E. Queensland, Au. and my soil is clay/loam. What should I do to save these trees?

Trouble with Corymbia Ficofolias (Flowering Red Gums)?
Hey Gas n Go,

Get your soil tested. The most important stat on the report will be the pH. The plant labels should say what the soil conditions need to be. You might also amend the soil with organic matter (mixed evenly around the roots). This will give some structure to your clay.

Be sure not to overwater as clay tends to not drain very well. Check to see if the roots are resting in standing water, if they are, perhaps you raise up the planting area a bit (basically replant about 6 inches higher by amending the soil with compost). They apparently love moisture, so this should not be too much problem.

Here are some articles you can read about your plants.

Saffron flower?

i purchased this at a latin store. it does not look like the fancy stuff. can you explain to me how to use this. is it the same flavor or a whole other ball of wax?

Saffron flower?
As a former chef I have used it before, and it is a different ball of wax, it is a similar in colour but much less intense in flavour.

I used it mainly for the colour, in rice, marinates, soups and sauces. If you do use it I would bloom it, by this I mean place it in a cup with boiling water over it to extract the colour, in general it is not the same but is a good substitute it one way but not in others, but here the cost is the issue.

Bulk Calla lily purchases online?

I am planning my September 1st wedding and have chosen calla lillies as my main flower. I know that they are expensive in my area and have done some research online. I have found a website that has decent pricing on them but I am leery of placing all my flower faith in an online company. I was wondering if anyone else has ever tried these online flower companies and how they have worked out. The compnay I am currently most interested in is Flowerbud.com. I can get a bulk box of 120 mini callas for $249. Any info would be helpful and much appreciated

Bulk Calla lily purchases online?
calla lilies are going to be my flower!! i love them! i am also thinking of ordering online because they are pricey.
Reply:The flower web sites may seem like a really great in-expensive way to purchase your flowers (esspecially more expensive flowers such as calla lilies) but I would never order them online. !st off you have no clue what condition they are kept in or where they came from so they could show up a completly different color, or size. 2nd there is a very good possibility they will show up damaged from freight. That is a great deal for callas, but are you willing to compromise quality for price? If so then by all means order them, but before you do get on the internet or flip through a phone book and check out wholesale florists in your area. They might be a little bit more pricey but it will be worth it. Also if you live in a warmer climate try growing them yourself. Good luck to you!!
Reply:Go to http://www.onlinewholesaleflowers.com/ You can buy the whole flowers (not just the buds) in bulk. Additionally, you can click on the tab that says %26#039;weddings in a box%26#039; and they can even ship a calla lilly package to you so you can make bridesmaid bouquets and boutonneires. Good Luck!!
Reply:I have done online flower sites for presents and my husband got my Valentine%26#039;s flowers that way. They are probably fine.
Reply:You should also try warehouse/discount stores and websites like costco.com and sams.com. They both sell bulk flowers. If you visited in store, I am sure that they could also sell you bulk flowers in person, which you could then inspect before walking out of the store. I have also heard people have excellent prices and luck with the floral departments of local grocery stores. I personally opted not to go with the on-line bulk flowers only because I am not crafty or creative to create my own bouquets, centerpieces, etc. I shopped around with smaller local florists and was able to find some really good prices. Good luck!

Stuff we purchased for wedding?

We bought the flower girl%26#039;s dress and shoes etc, headpiece.

We also bought the ringbearer pillow and the basket (amongst a bunch of other things but anyways)

I know the flower girl took off with the basket, i have the ringbearer pillow.

Is it rude to ask for the basket back? I kind of wanted to keep that. :)

Stuff we purchased for wedding?
Yes it%26#039;s rude. Let the little girl keep the basket
Reply:If its really memorable for you to keep it, you can purchase a similar one, add a few little gifts to it that she would like, have it personalized with a little hanging tile, (see a longaberger consultant) and offer to swap with her. Tell her you wanted her to have a special basket and you would like to have that one for your new home because it reminds you of her!
Reply:I know you want to keep it for sentimental reasons, but it is customary for the flower girl to keep her basket. I know it is not the same, but perhaps you can buy another one (exact or similar), and make arrangements with the parents to exchange it--so that you could keep the one that was used at the wedding......
Reply:If you want it back, ask the mother for it back. You can replace the little girls basket with another one. I understand you wanting to keep it. I kept the vase my bouquet was in during transport, as well as the feather from the dove that came off when I was petting it (right before the dove release at the end of our ceremony)

Welcome back! :)

Congratulation to C and J on their marriage! :)
Reply:I would just let the flower girl keep it, even if it did cost a good amount of money...just to show you are not %26#039;mean-spirited%26#039; like somebody mentioned. I like how other people said you can buy a replacement, it would make more sense that way since you want to keep it for sentimental purposes, I%26#039;m guessing.
Reply:Did you pay a lot of money for it? What will you do with a flower girl basket? If you wanted to resell it along with the ring bearer pillow (as a set)....well, then ask for it back. Usually these things are tossed or given to someone else.

I would have no use for a flower girl basket....but if you do...then call her mom and ask for it back.
Reply:Personally, I wouldn%26#039;t care one way or another. Besides, what are you going to do with the basket? Probably put it in a closet or storage and forget about it? Unless it was some heirloom worth hundreds of dollars, I wouldn%26#039;t worry about it. Plus, if you were just going to try to sell it what does it matter?
Reply:For christ sake, how cheap and petty is that???

Let the flower girl have the stupid $5 dollar basket. It will be collecting dust in your garage and end up in the trash or a yard sale anyway.

Stop being such a cheapo.

Terrible!
Reply:I still have a basket from when I was a flower girl. Since you paid for it, though, you are not out of line at all to ask for it back.
Reply:You don%26#039;t get the basket back the flower girl is suppost to keep it just like the ring bearer suppost to keep the pillow. Thats why you have pictures to remember.I wouldnt sweat it just let it be.
Reply:I would say that it traditional for the flower girl to keep the basket! Asking for it back would appear very mean spirited.
Reply:Yikes! Yes it is rude to ask for it back. You wouldn%26#039;t ask for the dress or shoes back would you?

If you did have the basket, what would you do with it anyway?
Reply:Sheesh! The flower girl gets to keep the basket - whatever it cost! It%26#039;s just part of the wedding expenses.

Oh, since the mom doesn%26#039;t have it - try to track it down and give it to that flower girl!
Reply:yes thats rude

if you wanted to keep it, you should hvae grabbed right after the ceremony, and put it in a safe place.

its too late. sorry
Reply:Did you take all the bridesmaids bouquets back too? That%26#039;s the flowergirl equivalent. She is supposed to be able to keep that.
Reply:Yes, it%26#039;s rude. Besides, it%26#039;s such a lovely keepsake for the flower girl to have.
Reply:COME ON, just let the poor little girl have it. IT%26#039;s like snatching a toy from a kid. Just get another one, dont be such a brat about this small thing.
Reply:Yeah it kinda is - when I was a flower girl I loved that keepsake - still at my parent%26#039;s house in fact!
Reply:A little. What are you going to do with a flower girl basket anyway?
Reply:no, not at all
Reply:Wow some people are rude today!

Honey I would just say let her have it, you will look better that way, plus it%26#039;s kind of like a thank you gift for her being apart of your day but also I don%26#039;t think it%26#039;s really wrong to ask for the basket back either since you bought it.

But then again you don%26#039;t know where it is, so start ringing around to see who has it. But do it casually, not like %26#039;where%26#039;s my flower girl basket!?!%26#039;.

People just get a bit crazy when it comes to weddings, they want to keep every little memento and reminder they can get their hands on which is at your expense!

Just start talking to people and see what happened to the stuff and get it back if you need it. I%26#039;m sure it will all turn up at a relative%26#039;s place.

Whatever you decide just don%26#039;t stress too much, you are married now, that is better than some basket :)

Good luck! xx

I am from GA and i have been on line dating a guy in Gambia for a few and he has purchased me a ticket to come

is he after green card? he asked me to move there. but i have three kids and i dont want to change things for them. he has sent me flowers and candy and has never asked for money you know the signs they say look for in a scam.

I am from GA and i have been on line dating a guy in Gambia for a few and he has purchased me a ticket to come
I would think that the green card is at least part of the reason he%26#039;s after. If he%26#039;s only scamming for money, he would lose more because with a green card, he can earn more than what he can scam off you. You just won%26#039;t know until the two of you start living together in the US after awhile and whether or not he%26#039;s after your green card, he won%26#039;t obviously show that he%26#039;s after that. These issues would be removed if you were to find someone locally, although you may already be %26#039;in love%26#039; with the guy in Gambia by now. I%26#039;m guessing that you must be eager to clear your suspicions by now. =D

What is the ultimate D2Xs system if it is to be the last camera system purchased?

I%26#039;m not a pro but don%26#039;t want to be held back by the camera system and technology creep as I expect to shoot better pictures over time. I plan to go with the D2Xs over a D80 because the D2Xs%26#039;s current technology should be sufficient for a long time. Since the D2Xs is standard, my question is really about lenses and total cost of the system. I can spend $5,000 to $7,000 for camera and lenses.

I think I need about four lenses; a micro, wideangle, mid range (28-55-85MM) and telephoto (200 or 300MM). Most pictures will be taken while %26quot;putzing%26quot; around and will include walkaround, landscape, portrait, wildlife and closeups of flowers, etc. What are the best value lenses in the focal lengths I need? Long-focal-length lenses I want stablized.

Thanks!!

What is the ultimate D2Xs system if it is to be the last camera system purchased?
The D2Xs is Nikon%26#039;s top of the line model. The body itself costs $4250. For the lenses you say you want, add another...

$400 or $740 for the 60mm or 105mm micro

$1200 for the Nikon 17-55 f/2.8

$1600 for the Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 (stabilized)

and maybe another $900 for the Nikon 12-24mm.

Do you want a flash and tripod with that? Add another $310 for an SB800 flash and perhaps $700 to $1500 for a quality tripod (I%26#039;ve been drooling over a Gitzo + Arca-Swiss combination myself.)

Add another $400 to $800 for some 2GB SanDisk Extreme lV memory cards, perhaps a protective B+W UV MRC filter for each lens, a circular polarizer (a 77mm thread will fit both the 17-55 and the 70-200 lens), a spare battery for the camera, spare batteries for the flash if you get one, and a nice carrying case.

Top that all off with Photoshop CS3. That%26#039;s $650 for the program itself and a few hundred more if you buy some plug-ins. If you plan on bulk-processing, also consider Nikon Capture or Capture One.

That list adds up to about $8.000 without the extra options and software, to over $20.000 for the full package.

Between the D80 and the D2Xs, Nikon has the D200 for %26#039;just%26#039; $1340. The D200 offers a metal body, 5 frames per second, 11 auto-focus points... it%26#039;s a very nice camera. Then either add the lenses I mentioned above, or take your lens selection down a notch as well.

I use the D200 with the 17-55mm f/2.8. This is an awesome combination, but it%26#039;s pretty heavy and conspicuous for %26#039;putzing around%26#039;. The D200 is used by plenty of professionals, so I doubt it%26#039;ll hold you back (unless you really need 8 frames per second). By the time you outgrow it, upgrade to whatever replaces the D2Xs.

I%26#039;d also skip the 12-24mm zoom to begin with (although it is a great lens for landscapes), the expensive tripod (there are plenty of options for under $200), and one or two other items. It%26#039;s easy enough to assemble a professional setup for under $7000... but you can%26#039;t get the top of the line versions of the entire Nikon catalog.
Reply:OMG answered just what I was thinking in his %26quot;Best Answer%26quot; above. Why not get the D200 and spend the %26quot;extra%26quot; money on either more or better lenses?

I also use the D200 and 17-55 combo and think it%26#039;s great. I %26quot;go to%26quot; the 17-55 when I am %26quot;serious%26quot; or doing more critical work, but usually have the infamous 18-200 VR lens on my D200 so it%26#039;s ready at all times. I use the 60 mm macro lens, but recommend the 105 mm VR macro. I have two %26quot;cheap%26quot; Nikon lenses on my wish list right now. fhotoace%26#039;s favorite 24-85 and Nikon%26#039;s new 70-300 VR lens. Both are very well reviewed and both cost about $1,000 less than Nikon%26#039;s ultra-pro level lenses.

I defer to OMG%26#039;s list for accessories and I%26#039;d take his advice on anything.

And I have some bad news for you. I%26#039;m 56 years old and I%26#039;m starting to look at major purchases as %26quot;the one that will last for the rest of my life.%26quot; Haha - that%26#039;s not YOUR bad news, though. The bad news is that I doubt ANY electronic device will be the %26quot;last one%26quot; you buy. Either it will ultimately fail or you will so fascinated by a newer and %26quot;better%26quot; version of what you already have that you will just need to buy a new one. At $4,500 it will be very painful to replace the D2Xs. You can have three D200%26#039;s for that money. Get a D200 and then do not hold back on buying lenses.
Reply:come on man....don%26#039;t be over-ambitious.........I perfectly accept to OMG%26#039;s and Dr.Sam%26#039;s answers.........Get the D200 and some very good %26quot;expensive%26quot; lenses. Take help from Kenrockwell on why an expensive camera body is unnecessary.

Tree Looks Like It's Dying! Please help! (Pics included)?

Location: Houston, TX

Hardiness Zone: 9a

Soil: Sand/Clay/Dirt

Age:Unknown. In present location for about 5 months

Watering: Every other day

The home we purchased came with a tree in the backyard. We%26#039;re not sure what kind of tree it is (can you id it?), but for some reason, it looks extremely thin and fragile.

Many of the branches are barren and/or covered with very delicate, curled up leaves (seem dying). The leaves often change to a pinkish/purple color and fall off. The leaves also have holes, brown marks, and other damage. Once in a while, we%26#039;ll see a flower, but it%26#039;s usually very short-lived.

The roots also seem somewhat exposed, with mushrooms growing at the base.

Here are the pictures:

Please help me id and diagnose it! Out of all the trees/shrubs we have in our backyard, this seems to be doing the worst.

Tree Looks Like It%26#039;s Dying! Please help! (Pics included)?
At first I thought this was a rose of sharon, but I think it may be a crepe myrtle, too, because the leaves are turning pink/purple just before falling off just like my crepe myrtle is doing now. Give it a shot of fertilizer (not in the heat of the day) and the mushrooms growing at the base are telling you to slow down a bit with the water. I would also mulch around the base and stake it on two sides so the trunk doesn%26#039;t break in high wind.
Reply:Hi from Houston. Yep, that%26#039;s a crepe myrtle.. a young one. You probably couldn%26#039;t kill it if you tried. You see them all over the Houston area. They stand up to our winters and require minimal care. First, quit watering. It is suffering now from all the rain we%26#039;ve had. It probably has %26quot; wet feet%26quot; and that is what is causing the leaf drop. Crepes can go long periods without any water. There is fungus under that tree. Rake that up and then treat with a fungicide.

Crepes bloom on new wood, so you%26#039;ll want to prune it back in March after danger of frost has passed. For now, dead head the old blooms and you%26#039;ll see new blooms appear through October. When young sprindly suckers appear at the base, cut them off. They just sap the tree of vitamins.
Reply:From the pics the tree looks like a crepe myrtle.

It just looks like it is going through some stress. Keep up on the watering and allow it to get through this bad period. It will be fine.
Reply:It is a Crepe Myrtle. Due to TX%26#039;s crazy weather (too much rain then drought) most plants/trees are going through major stress right now. No worries...my crepes did the same thing. Our wonderful sunshine has helped soooo much!

The good thing is Crepes are very durable here in TX.

Pull out the mushrooms (caused from all of the rain) and put some Miracle Gro garden soil around the base of the trunk over the exposed roots. That helps give the tree nutrients for about 3 months. You can also put some mulch (hardwood recommended) over the garden soil to help keep the soil in place when they do get watered.

Welcome to TX! =)
Reply:My guess is also over-watering.

Thumbs up to Cat%26#039;s answer. I couldn%26#039;t have said it better myself.
Reply:It looks like a crape myrtle.

I don%26#039;t know how your soil is - sandy soil drains quickly, clay soil doesn%26#039;t. You say it%26#039;s sand/clay...clay with some sand can resemble concrete.

You should NOT be watering every other day - that%26#039;s too much, and the roots may be drowning. brown, drying, curling up leaves can be an indication of either a thirsty plant, or a drowning plant. When feeder roots are dying, they can%26#039;t transfer water up to the top of the plant - leaves will wilt, curl, and brown as a result. Whether the roots are dying because they have no water, or are dying because they have too much water and are rotting...the affect on the top of the plant is the same. The fact that you frequently have mushrooms growing there tells me there is excessive moisture, and that even the soil on the surface is never getting dry.

Newly planted trees %26amp; shrubs should only need water every 4-5 days in hot dry weather (assuming you have well-drained soil). Soil that drains quickly may need water more often, and soil that is mostly clay will retain water much longer, and will need less frequent watering.

If you are in doubt as to whether it needs water, do a little %26quot;exploratory%26quot;...move the mulch, and dig down a little if you can feel moisture with the tip of your finger by the time you%26#039;re up to your knuckles - then it doesn%26#039;t need water. The top inch of soil may be dry - but if the soil underneath is moist, you%26#039;re fine.

Move the mulch away, from those roots near the surface, and cover them with soil, then re-cover with mulch (taking care not to cover the crown - where the roots become the trunk).

Water when needed (possibly every 4-5 days - depending on soil texture and rainfall). Do this by placing a hose over the roots, turning it on to a trickle only, and letting it run for about 15 minutes. This will ensure that the water is penetrating down deep. Less watering is needed when the weather gets cooler.

The tree does not look too bad, really. If it was recently tranplanted (5 months ago), It may be dropping leaves more do to shock. It%26#039;s a survival mechanism, as it will lose less water with fewer leaves. It may also be suffering from overwatering.

Cut back on the water - in frequent, deep waterings and much better than frequent shallow ones. Aside from waterlogged roots - frequent shallow waterings encourage the roots to form only near the surface (where the water is) - making them even MORE prone to drought in the future. Deep waterings encourage deep root growth, which means they will need less extra water in the future when they get established.

Does anyone know of a processing company that makes recyclable paper withwild seeds impended?

Anybody know anything about orchids?

The orchid I had died but then at the top of the stem where the flower died it started to grow leaves again. I cut it off and planted it in some orchid mixture I purchased and now another set of leaves has grown again. Any ideas? The one I planted is still alive and has those root looking shoots growing out of it all over, but does not seem to be doing too much more. There is no sign of a stem coming out of the leaves.

Anybody know anything about orchids?
What it sounds like to me is a keiki (a vegetative method of reproduction commonly found in phalaenopsis orchids). Please take a look at the link to see if that is what you are dealing with.

If that turns out to be correct, you can use the following link for more information on care of phal orchids.

Reply:I do know some things about orchids. Where do you live N/E/S/W?

I live down south and keep my orchid plant outside. It is not

in a pot but more a part of a palm tree. It is a white cattalaya.

The plant hangs out in the sun and I water it every other day.

It blooms around April and each year it has another bloom.

I am up to 21 now. The plant is about 23 years old. Maybe more.

I have it for 22 years. It takes little care, the less you worry about it

the better it seems to be. I do take it inside if it is going to get

cold here in Florida. I feed it about a month before it is to bloom.

Remember they live in the tropics usually just attached to trees

like air plants. They can live longer than humans. The plant itself is not a pretty sight but the flower it produces is absolutely beautiful.

Your plants are alive just let them grow. If you put them in a pot

they need no soil just nuggets especially for orchids. Keep the nugets moist by putting the pots in water once a week. As it grows put it in water more often.

Good Luck.
Reply:Patience.

I have one by a window that gets moderate sun (in the house, I kept it in the same pot it came in), I did not buy any fancy dirt or whatever. I water it once a week only (I put a whole cup into mine, so it is covered with water), turning the pot about a quarterturn, and it is about to bloom again (the 4rth time in about 3 years). Once it starts, it takes a couple of months for the buds to get moving. But once they open, they also stay beautiful for a couple of weeks!

Good luck!
Reply:Grow it in a shaded area. Use a good draining soil, and don%26#039;t over-water.

Need to find a site that will help with a commercial landlord/tenant dispute. Want vacate before lease it up.?

The landlord is constantly harrassing. We want to leave by Oct. 31st. Gave her rent for Sept./Oct. only (of course she wants till the end of May). Have been good tenants for 15 yrs.The lastest incident is the washroom. It%26#039;s a total pig sty %26amp; she won%26#039;t clean it. We offered to clean it, supply toilet paper, towels %26amp; soap if she would drop the rent by $50 a mo. Her reply, %26quot;get the hell out of here%26quot; (my partner was in her house at the time). She has turned the hot water down to save money, which is a health issue as the business is food oriented. She finally got the flower box below our window fixed %26amp; told the people who fixed it to put the soil in her garden. She took the soil that I purchased every year (about $100 worth). We, along with the tenant next door, asked her if she would turn her central a/c back on, we would pay her according. She said, %26quot;no, I%26#039;ll be too cold%26quot;. It was included in our rent for the1st yr. She is a stubborn dim wit. Someone that you can%26#039;t reason with.

Need to find a site that will help with a commercial landlord/tenant dispute. Want vacate before lease it up.?
Technically, you did sign a lease. However, landlords are cheap and yours seems cheaper than most. I don%26#039;t think she%26#039;d be inclined to pay a lawyer to collect an amount that would probably less than what she would end up owing her lawyer. Courts are sympathetic to tenants. If everything you say is true, she is not likely anxious to get into court. If she threatens to sue you for performance of the lease...I%26#039;d say she%26#039;s bluffing. Pay her for as long as you occupy the unit. If you decide you need to leave early, I wouldn%26#039;t worry.

Additionally, speaking as a landlord, anyone that would mess things up with a 15 year tenant needs psychiatric help.
Reply:Are you for real? You own a business that have customers using the washroom and you want your landlord to clean it? That is your responsiblility. No wonder she told you to get the hell out. And as for the flower box, that is not a necessity either. If you wanted it fixed, you should have fixed it yourself.

Central air is not a necessity. Apparently after the first year of paying for it per your lease, she shut it off. It was costing her too much. Now apparently she doesnt want the hassle of figuring out how much to charge you and the other tenant. That is her option.

So is the option of turning down the hot water tank. You still have hot water. Just not as hot as you like it. Your statement leads me to believe that she pays the water bill also.

I know you dont want to hear this, but I suggest you find another location to have your business. If your lease isnt up until May, then you are liable for your intire lease and need to pay up til May. Otherwise she will sue you in court and the business will have a black mark on its credit.

Find a place that YOU pay all your utilities, then you can have it your way. A landlord is always going to find ways to cut his costs. Sounds like she is inexperienced in the commercial field, otherwise she would never have paid the utilities. I can imagine the utilities are astranomical due to two businesses using them.
Reply:if you signed a lease, I would think you are legally bound to abide by it, but go to an attorney (most 1st consults are free) and find out what your options are

Rose Tree Question?

I purchased two rose trees through mail order. They looked like dead sticks when they came 3 months ago, but I followed the advice of the seller and planted them and waited. They never did come to life so I have received a refund. Now I have 2%26#039; rose branches growing from the base of the roots. How do I save these? I am a complete beginner. I don%26#039;t even know what %26quot;deadhead%26quot; means. They are in a flower pot.

Rose Tree Question?
No problem... every one is a beginner for a while.

Rose trees are the %26quot;Frankenstein%26quot; monsters of the Rose world. The plant you %26quot;paid%26quot; for is the stuff on the top, that makes it look like a tree. The %26quot;trunk%26quot; is a not so showy-wild-something or another type of rose, and the roots belong to a third plant, usually a climbing rose called %26quot;Dr. Huey%26quot;. The stuff growing out of the bottom, belong to the roots. If it is Dr. Huey, it%26#039;s a red climbing rose bush, that blooms only once per year. I wouldn%26#039;t save it, not ever.

If you%26#039;re a beginner, and want to try some roses, look at Rosa rugosa (Salt spray roses), they are easy to grow, and quite care free. Also consider miniature roses.

Good luck

I hope that this helps

My landlord is harrassing me? What can I do? I am told I am not allowed to use my backdoor.?

I live in a mobile home park. The owner%26#039;s chose the most obnoxious people to be the landlords and they are messing with everyone. I was told I told I was only allowed to use the back door of my own trailer (I purchased it) in the case of an emergency because I was stepping into the neighbors front yard. I have a gorgeous flower bed and they said I have regular grass in the border grass. I told them to leave me alone or I would sell my trailer to a black family and they implied something would happen to my trailer. I am tired of the harrassment. I consider myself a great neighbor and tenant, but prior to them being landlord, I use to make fun of her lying, bragging husband, now revenge is theirs. What can I do.

My landlord is harrassing me? What can I do? I am told I am not allowed to use my backdoor.?
The place to start is by reading your lease and the park%26#039;s rules and regulations. Those are binding, but the manager%26#039;s opinion is not necessarily binding. Also, check to see if your state has a mobile home park landlord-tenant law which may give you additional rights. I can%26#039;t imagine your trailer is located right on the property line so that you can%26#039;t step out of your back door without stepping on someone else%26#039;s lot. Is there a map showing the lot boundaries? Finally, make sure you have insurance to cover the trailer and your personal property inside it.
Reply:For starters, I would stop with the ridiculous biggoted comments about %26#039;selling to a black family%26#039;.

While it sounds like your landlords aren%26#039;t being very accommodating, my guess is that you aren%26#039;t a model tenant either, given the nature of your comment.
Reply:speak to the owner and let them know about the situation. if you are in fact walking on someones front proerty than it makes sense. but if u feel they are burdening u with problems speak to the owner!
Reply:From your second to last sentence, it sounds like this is personal. And from your statement, %26quot;I told them to leave me alone or I would sell my trailer to a black family%26quot;, it sounds like you deserve every bit of it.
Reply:First there is too much information missing. Second, did you sign a contract and what are stipulations as far as using a back door and flowers being planted. And third it is so sad you are prejudice saying you sell to a black family. I would be happy to have a black family next to me (i am white) as long as they take care of the place. I know a lot of trashy white people I would not want for my neighbor.
Reply:Sell the thing and move. The comment about selling to a black family shows what kind of person you really are. What comes around goes around.

You%26#039;re hardly a great neighbor if you make fun of people, you bigoted, trailer-dwelling.......

What do u think bout india and indians?

Before u answer that i wanna tell u that

India maintains the third largest military force in the world.

India, lying within the Indomalaya ecozone, hosts significant biodiversity; it is home to 7.6% of all mammalian, 12.6% of avian, 6.2% of reptilian, and 6.0% of flowering plant species.

a GDP growth rate of 9.2%, the Indian economy is among the fastest growing in the world.[14] It is the world%26#039;s third largest as measured by purchasing power parity (PPP), with a GDP of US$4 trillion.

What do u think bout india and indians?
India is a beautiful country with lots and lots of culture and centuries old cities,.its a shame that most people who didnt even visit India saying that its a poor country and that people live there in shacks..Indians maintain their culture in most interesting ways by their colouful festivals, and true spirit.there%26#039;s more to India than just being a developing country with purchasing power.Another fact is that Indian food, clothing, jewellery, yoga, martial arts etc are gaining popularity all over the world.i just wish people would stop calling every asian a %26#039;paki%26#039;...and realise that each nation has its own individuality.
Reply:I think Indians are great. They seem to be a hardworking people that strives for excellence.

India is pretty neat country. Lots of history and biodiversity. Cool stuff.

Nice food, good ideas, and they came up with the kama sutra. Can%26#039;t beat that!
Reply:Apart from the stupid politicians who have kept the country in misery for years, its great!
Reply:they are nice people like others in the world but a bad thing about them is that english has strike them and if they were too clever they would not let do.
Reply:Knock, knock, Indian here. First, please, make the first letter of ANY country capital...and my country is the best, whatever the world may think.
Reply:India is a very beautiful and spiritual country.Too bad the people there are quite conservative. At least that%26#039;s what I noticed when I visited India.

Problem with copperheads in Eastern Ky.?

My sister, who lives next to me, found a baby copperhead under her deck, a week later I found another baby copperhead in my small flower garden adjoining my walkway just a few feet from my front door. We%26#039;ve searched for more to no avail. Not even an adult copperhead. We purchased SNAKEAWAY, but the container reads that it won%26#039;t affect copperheads. Any advice on keeping them away? I have a 3 year old granddaughter who loves to play outside.

Problem with copperheads in Eastern Ky.?
Copperheads are tough to keep away. The active ingredient in the %26quot;SnakeAway%26quot; is aromatic naphtha, which is moth balls for 10 times the price. Neither will keep Copperheads out of your yard.

Cats will hunt and kill snakes. So will Guinea Hens, if you live in the country. Keeping the yard mowed short, clearing debris, removing wood piles, etc. will help by eliminating hiding places. Put lattice up around the deck to keep your granddaughter from going under it. And remove any thick mulch from your garden. Snakes are cold blooded and will be drawn to warm places like a mulch bed.
Reply:Ok, had the same problem and this is what I was told. They love mulch. It keeps them warm. I was told to put mothballs around where they have been seen. I tried it and haven%26#039;t seen any more but I also got rid of mulch pile. Hope it works for you.
Reply:Get some cats.....maybe alot of em....

How to Enforce a Homeowners' Assoc. Bylaw?

I am the treasurer of an Homeowners Association. (Yuck) Anyways, an investor has purchased three of the 11 townhomes and a renter in one of them puts her trash in a garbage sack and puts it on top of a shrub by the front door all the time. Sometimes she never gets it to the street on garbage day. The bylaws specifically state that garbage mus be in a container (garbage can) and can never be in the front of the establishment except on designated city garbage days. She and the investor/owner have been warned twice verbally. What can the assoc. do if she continues? The bylaws do not provide for specific penalty amounts. Can we sue the investor and force him to evict the violator? Can we suspend her use of the common areas-that is the drive way, parking spaces, sidewalk and flower beds? Any suggestions or help would be appreciated. The last time the renter was warned she threatened to give us something to %26quot;really%26quot; complain about.

How to Enforce a Homeowners%26#039; Assoc. Bylaw?
Your bylaws allow for fines. Have the association (everyone who shows up at the next meeting) set and issue a fine for each current and future violation with notification to the owner with a quotation from your bylaws. If these fines are not collected in a timely fashion the condo association could then file for a lien on the property to secure payment. I doubt you have a legal chance to suspend any owners full right to enjoyment of their property so forget the idea of suspending use of common areas. Since you have no contract with the tenant you can only focus on the owner and perhaps keeping them informed of past situations and %26quot;threats%26quot; will aid to your goal.

My Canon SD630 seems to render purple blue. What do you know about this?

I first noticed this on the computer while editing photos taken with this recently purchased camera. Yesterday I noticed it while taking a pic of a pretty purple snap dragon. I looked at the flower, then the display, and saw it again. The purple was lost to a thick (a little dull) blue.

Is Photoshop the only way to %26quot;fix%26quot; this? Anyway to rebalance the colors?

My Canon SD630 seems to render purple blue. What do you know about this?
Check %26quot;My Colors%26quot; on your camera. It may be set to %26quot;Vivid Blue.%26quot; If not, you can go to %26quot;Custom Colors%26quot; and adjust things to your liking.

Change to the Manual Mode and then press the FUNC button to bring up the menus. Scroll up or down until you find the %26quot;My Colors%26quot; menu and go from there.
Reply:Try the snapdragon with auto-white balance. Okay, I%26#039;m sure that%26#039;s what you used in the first place, but why wouldn%26#039;t that work? I%26#039;m as confused as you are. Report It

Reply:Maybe the problem isn%26#039;t with your camera but your computer monitor! Do you calibrate your monitor? That%26#039;s the only way to get accurate colors on your monitor.

If you use Photoshop to %26quot;fix%26quot; it...and your monitor is at fault...you%26#039;ll be doing a lot of work for nothing. Unless you only look at pics on your computer, and never print them!
Reply:don%26#039;t know about photoshop

but I would go into camera menu

and press reset
Reply:darling, since we have the same camera I think the guy above me is right (Greg S), try calibrating the monitor, it should do it on its own, but sometimes things could get messed-up!....I don%26#039;t think is the camera.

Landscaping questions?

We%26#039;re in the process of putting a chain link fence up in the backyard and we want some shrubs to cover part of it. We purchased 4 PJM Rhododendrons and 3 White light Azaleas. I%26#039;m not sure if these should be placed in groupings of the same shrub or alternating every other shrub. I%26#039;m not sure what is usually done to look the best. Also, I%26#039;m planning on putting a flower garden in. Should these shrubs be used as the back of the garden or should they be standing alone and the garden seperate. I%26#039;m obviously confused on what to do. Any suggestions would be great!!!!

Landscaping questions?
Landscaping is like art and the yard an empty canvas. As long as you place the plants properly, i.e. correct soil, sunlight etc. then do what you think looks good!

Personally I LOVE Rhododendrons and would group them, but not close together.
Reply:I would group the same plants together, its much more natural looking and pleasing to the eye and then if one plant dies or doesnt%26#039; grow the same size or shape as the others of that variety its not so obvious

Wedding Pages???

heres the thing...I am having an outdoor wedding and will be walking across a bridge and down the aisle at my wedding...my two younger cousins are carrying the train of my dress, however, they are both females...traditionally if they are males they are called pages...what is the proper name for them if they are females. Also, am i responsible for purchasing their dreses?? Our wedding is in June, do you think an appropriate easter dress for both the %26quot;pages%26quot; and the flowergirl, and suit for the ring bearer would be appropriate?? they are all growing like weeds and im afraid ordering a flower girl/page dress from my bridal boutique would be outgrown before our big day! Any suggestions would be great! Thank you!

Wedding Pages???
I would still call the girls %26quot;pages%26quot; and because you are having an outdoor wedding, easter dresses and suits would be a fantastic idea, because they will cost less and it wont be so bad if they get them dirty or grow out of them quickly.
Reply:While I can%26#039;t tell you for sure if girls are also called pages (I think so, but probably someone else will have a better answer), your idea to buy the dresses/suit during the Easter season is excellent. Great way to save funds and make sure that the items fit.

Edit:

I just found the term %26quot;junior attendant%26quot; at this site:

http://www.foreverwed1.com/articles/chil...

That term may apply if you prefer not to use the term page.

Some more info on involving children:

http://www.foreverwed1.com/articles/chil...
Reply:Call them %26quot;paiges%26quot;... more feminine than %26quot;pages%26quot; also feel free to get them after Easter (clearance) dresses and the ring bearer an after Easter suit!

You only have to pay for their clothes if you want to. Their mom is responsible for the tab, just tell her what to buy!
Reply:Why on earth do they need %26quot;names%26quot;. They are all attendants like the bridesmaids and, yes, it would be appropriate for you to at least offer to pay for their dresses. Bridal shops charge horribly high prices for small dresses. Go through yellow pages and find a kids shop that carries first communion dresses. They%26#039;ll have lovely ones for $40. By next mont even SEARS will have gorgeous easter dresses or white communion dresses that will be cheap. Get the dreses a bit loose so if they grow in 4 monts, they can be altred a wee bit.
Reply:They%26#039;re called pages or train bearers, and neither term is gender specific.

Tortoise experts please?

Hello!!!

I have a female 2006 hermanns tortoise, I bath her every 2 days, and most days she is fed dandelions, hawkbits and cats ears, hawks-beard, plantains, clover, creeping bell-flower (mainly leaves), occassionally rose petals, kale, carrot, potatoe and peppers. and is always given tortoise dust sprinkled over her food.

The lights are on around 12 hours a day, the temp at the hot end is around 93 degrees, but at night it gets so low that i purchased a heat mat, but i heard that tortoises should not have heat mats as it burns them???? she seems ok though.

every day she has a good stroll around the living room sometimes for 20 mins, sometimes for an hour (depends how cold it is).

she is 8cm long and ways 100g

Is everything Im doing correct??????????

Does she sound like a healthy tort to you? i am a beginer and want everything to be perfect and want a happy healthy tort!

thanks

xXx

Tortoise experts please?
as long as she is eating and strolling around she will be alright.
Reply:hi sweetie you sound like you are doing the best for your tortoise, but i would not recommend a heat mat, i use heat lamps so the tortoise can move away if too hot, they are baskers so it is natural to get the heat they require from the top side of their shell, i would not recommend potatoes in her diet and limit her pepper intake as too much is not good for them, check out the tortoise trust web site for a full list of what a Herman eats, but you are trying to do your best for your tortoise so well done
Reply:A few improvements.

I would avoid potatoes and only feed peppers once in a great while. Peppers are a fruit and high in sugar . This feeding list has healthy foods for your tortoise.

http://www.russiantortoise.org/edible_pl...

They are appropriate for all turtles and torts.

If the temperature falls below 60 degrees at night you can use a heat emmiter to raise it a bit. Anything above 60 should be fine.

Do you have a UVB light? If not make sure to get one right away. It%26#039;s really important! =)
Reply:It does sound like your on your way to being a responsible turtle owner. Heat mats or rocks should never be used with any reptile, because they are cold blood and have fewer nerve cells in their skin, they easily get thermal burns. And since they arent the cleanest animals, those burns will quickly get infected. If you feel you need the mat to maintain proper temperature, place it underneath the cage, not in it. You should also find a good reptile vet in your area, so that you can establish the proper procedures for brumation (turtle hibernation).
Reply:Generally OK. Http://www.tortoisetrust.org should help a lot, they are UK based and have a GREAT tortoise site.

Food- avoid root veggies (carrots, potatoes), and only dust with vitamins a couple times a week- it is easy to overdo them, especially on young tortoises.

Temps- belly warmth is OK- IF it can be carefully regulated. It should NEVER get more than about 90F, and too many of them have no heat regulation. I like to use behaviors to regulate temps- if it avoids the hot end, cool it off a bit, etc.

Baths- I am in the minority, but I don%26#039;t like forced baths, especially not that often. I believe that if the habitat humidity is right (and they DO need at least one place with high humidity), food moisture is right, and water is easily available that they don%26#039;t need the stress of what must be a torture to them. Besides- they have waterproof skin- how much can they absorb in a short soak?
Reply:As you can see from the responses - keeping a tortoise can mean reading between conflicting suggestions. Sweet potatoes are fine in moderation but I would avoid %26#039;normal%26#039; potatoes.

It isn%26#039;t good to allow your tortoise to roam around on the floor. This is one common way for your tortoise to get a %26#039;draft%26#039; and could possibly make it poorly. As long as you have a big vivarium then it%26#039;ll be fine in that. The summer months is the time to take it out and allow it to explore it surroundings preferably outside in the blazing sunshine but with adequate items for it to explore and shade.

Heat mats are fine so long as your tortoise can not dig down to it, simply place something over it preventing direct contact.

I would suggest buying a number of books and doing online researching - you will find different responses to certain questions - the best thing to do is decide for yourself and using commonsense.

Even the experts can not always agree on a tortoise welfare - truly.
Reply:Your Hermann%26#039;s only needs a heat source if temperatures go below 10 c which in a house is very unlikely to happen at night. Heatmats are known to dehydrate tortoises and do not keep a hermann%26#039;s in a vivarium it causes runny nose syndrome which is serious for a tortoise.

Good reliable websites are www.tortoisetrust.org and www.thetortoisehouse and of course on yahoo groups look up tortoisetrust and tortoisefriends where you can ask the experts any tortoise related question you want.Hopefully i will see you on these sites, under briantortoise3234, please say hi, i have 4 adults and 6 hatchling i am selling.
Reply:Do not put heat mats in with your turtle as like you say it can burn them, I have a tortoise %26amp; brought a heat mat %26amp; a month later my tort was poorly %26amp; did not realise he was burning his feet on the mat. Your doing a brilliant job %26amp; your tortie sounds as though she is doing just fine.

Hermann%26#039;s Tortoise (Testudo hermanni) and Marginated tortoise (Testudo marginata) are small European Species. There are two subspecies of hermann%26#039;s tortoises. One subspecies grows to about 5 or 6 inches the other subspecies grows to 7 or 8 inches. The marginated tortoise grows from 9 to 11 inches. The care of both these species is very similar. They both come from a Mediterranean climate that is mild/temperate to subtropical. Neither tortoise digs a burrow but both species dig shallow pallets into soft earth or under bushes and debris to hide from the heat or cold. Both species naturally hibernate in the wild, but on warm winter days may become active.Herman%26#039;s tortoises and marginated tortoises are grazers and herbivores. They do not eat meat of any kind and require very little fruit. Adult tortoises can be maintained in grass yards and lawns where there are a variety of edible weeds, flowers or other plants. If a grassy yard is not available adults can be fed dark green vegetables. If they are fed only dry foods (such as dry tortoise diets or dry leaves and grass) they must have water available every day.

When is the best time to plant a hibiscus in the North East, an what is the best way to care for a hibiscus?

I have searched all over the internet trying to find a specific answer for the right way to plant a non-tropical hibiscus in the North-East, my home state of WV. Also to see what is the best way to care for this beautiful flower type? Mainly I wanted to know the best time of the year to plant the hibiscus %26amp; what if any thing special is involved with the planting of the hibiscus. My Mother %26amp; GrandMother both have purchased some hibiscus seeds %26amp; are excited to get them in the groud, but asked if I could find out on line the best way to plant %26amp; to care for them to be certain before they do plant them. Thank You so very much for your time %26amp; answering this question for me an my family. If you have any other questsions please feel free to e-mail or IM me. Thank You so very much once again as I know your time is valuable!!

When is the best time to plant a hibiscus in the North East, an what is the best way to care for a hibiscus?
Okay, looks like you are the same zone that I am in so, as a result, you can plant you perennial hibiscus now. Oh, wait, are you planting seeds or established plants. If already established plants then plant now. If seed then wait until spring. There is nothing special about planting or caring for them. They like full sun and they don%26#039;t like to have wet feet so make sure you don%26#039;t over water them. Keep the soil moist, but not wet. Other than that their care is similar to any other plant in the garden. Be aware that hibiscus flowers only survive one day, but they keep producing all summer long.

Whats the Repuglicons next excuse for Bush's war on Iraqi citizens?

You can point out the deceptions over the UN inspection program, the uranium purchases, the aluminum tubes, the biological warfare agents, the %26#039;45 minutes%26#039;, the drones, the chemical warfare capabilities, the mobile laboratories, the links between Hussein and Al Quaeda.

the lack of links between Hussein %26amp; Rumsfeld, the deceptions about the invasion of Kuwait, and the over-whelming deceit about the links between Hussein %26amp; September 11. You can talk about the flower strewn roads, Jessica Lynch, the American troops pulling down the statue in a close-up shot, the failure to protect antiquities and libraries while protecting oil interests, Halliburton, sacking public servants who were party members, selling national assets, disbanding the army, using mercenaries, killing civilians, Abu Ghraib, building permanent bases, destroying Fallujah, using napalm and depleted uranium.

So will their next excuse be the REAL reason?

That bad man tried to kill Mr. Bush%26#039;s daddy...

Whats the Repuglicons next excuse for Bush%26#039;s war on Iraqi citizens?
I%26#039;ll just add that significantly than failing to protect the libraries and antiquities, they also failed to protect the water and electricity supplies as well as munitions in favor of solely protecting the oil interests, permitting much of the looting to occur that left Iraq%26#039;s infrastructure in shambles, then allowing only American firms to participate in the reconstruction, resulting in a 67% unemployment rate during the first year of the occupation. These conditions contributed in no small part to the insurgency.

The %26#039;links%26#039; between rumsfield and Hussien where taken decades ago when the first war went on and a %26#039;peace %26#039; agreement was reached

the war is because some terrorists attacked us, if you need to remember how, go to google and look up images under %26#039;9/11 twin towers%26#039; this is all the proof I need to support the war...and now you%26#039;d probably start agueing with me that Iraq didn%26#039;t attack us, and I know they didn%26#039;t but they supported the people that did, which is an act of war.

Wrinkles on orchid's leaves - Serious help needed!!!!?

I have a Phal and a Dendrobium I purchased about 1-2 months ago. I put them on the window sill (facing west) above my bathtub (so they%26#039;ll get misted everyday) along with my other 2 healthy and still flowering orchids. The Phal has 4 leaves and 3 of the leaves are now wrinkly. I water every week and fertilize every other week. Can anyone tell me what happened? Was it too dry? Do I water too much? Is it the pot? I use sea-grass-like natural pot and it is pretty large (8%26quot;x5%26quot;). The Dendrobium started with 3 branches. The leaves on the 2 smaller branches started to yellow and I had to cut them all off. The color of the branches are still green. Only 1 branch now has leaves but they start yellow-ing as well. I use the same caring regime as my other orchids. The pot is exactly the same as the Phal that is wrinkly. There is no wrinkle on the leaves of the Dendrobium. What did I do? Thank you for helpin. P.S. I used different and smaller pots for my other healthy orchids that are still flowerin

CALL HOME AND GARDEN MAGAZINE, THEY HAVE SOME ISSUES AND KNOWLEDGES RE YOUR PROBLEM, IF YOU DON%26#039;T WANT TO GET BOTHERED BY IT GO TO THE INTERNET OR BETTER YET TALK TO YOUR LOCAL GARDENING STORES.
Reply:If you used a smaller pot on the other two than that might be your probmlem orchids are very touchy. It also might be that it is getting to much sun, or that you are watering it, make sure that the roots aren%26#039;t sitting in water. Also the plant might have caught a disease, or some kind of pest. And depending on how long ago that occured it can spread to your other orchids, I recomenf that you go to your local library and check out Orchids for Dummies. It%26#039;s a great book that explains a lot. Hope this helps!
Reply:i water only when the moss is completely dry and almost crispy - but i think that it likely works out to about once per week - same as you.

are the roots getting enough air? my happy orchids are planted in ceramic pots with holes cut out from top to bottom.

i wonder about your sea grass pot... maybe something from the seagrass doesn%26#039;t agree with your orchid?

or maybe it got too chilly by the window?

sorry - hope it works out for ya

What do you do when you have a future-mother-in-law-zilla?

I love my fiance%26#039;s mother because she has done so much for he and i, and she is helping us out with a lot of the wedding expenses. she told me when her son proposed that she would make sure that i had the final say in all decisions, since it was my wedding and she didn%26#039;t have that luxury when she got married. Now, she is telling me i HAVE to walk down the aisle to THIS song, and the flower girl HAS to have this and that. the most recent is how ridiculous she thinks it would be for me to pay over $500 for the dress that i have found and fell in love with, because %26quot;you%26#039;re only going to wear it one time%26quot;. she literally yelled at me about how absurd she thought it was. I can%26#039;t tell her to shove off, because she%26#039;s helping us a lot with the wedding. I was planning on purchasing my dress myself, so she wouldn%26#039;t have to worry about it. What%26#039;s a mature, sensible way of dealing with her so we%26#039;re both happy?

What do you do when you have a future-mother-in-law-zilla?
Like someone else said above, this is just the beginning. I would definitely take care of this matter as soon as possible (before it gets any bigger) WITH your future husband because you two are going to be a TEAM for the rest of your life and you best learn how to resolve issues %26quot;together%26quot;.

So what if she%26#039;s footing the bill, she has already given you her word that you%26#039;ll have your final say in all decisions. I would gently but firmly remind her of that with your future husband supporting you, right by your side.

Please have a talk with your fiance. Make sure he is on the same page as you are. The wedding day is YOURS and your FIANCE%26#039;s.
Reply:thanks for the input. i talked to him and he says i should get what i want and his mom will just have to bite the bullet and deal with it. Report It

Reply:Gently remind her that it IS still your wedding and firmly let her know that because you only plan on getting married once, the dress that YOU are going to buy will be special enough to mark the occassion.
Reply:First, don%26#039;t tell her what you%26#039;re planning. Unless she%26#039;s paying for it, she doesn%26#039;t need to know the plans. I%26#039;m sorry, but its your own fault that she%26#039;s yelling at you about a $500 dress, because you shouldn%26#039;t have told her how much it cost.

For the tiny details, pick your battles. No one but you cares what song you walk down the aisle to, and no one at all cares what the flower girl is wearing or holding. The song will be nice, the girl will look cute, and you%26#039;ll be stunning no matter what. So give a little on the things that don%26#039;t matter, because it will go a long way toward getting her to keep her mouth shut about the things that do really matter.

You said the most important thing about why she%26#039;s being like this. Planning a wedding is something she never got to do. So she%26#039;s caught up in it. The best advice I can give you is for you to pick some things that you don%26#039;t care about so much, and give her those responsiblities. This worked wonders for me. Tell her %26quot;I can%26#039;t handle all this, will you pretty please help me by finding/making the pew bows?%26quot;
Reply:Just be polite. However, you have dug yourself into a hole, since you and your bf aren%26#039;t paying for the whole wedding yourselves.
Reply:just sit her down and tell her how gratefull you and your fiance are for all her help and that she has good taste and most of the things you do agree with her...even if you dont and tell her that you feel like shes shoving you off and that you know shes excited and that you dont want to hurt her feelings but shes making you feel like its not your wedding its hers..and tell her about the major things that bother you...the little things let them go..compliment her on the good ideas thats shes had...im sure if shes wants the best for you and her son she will back off..if she doesnt then get your fiance invovled..hes gonna need to talk to her if she doesnt change..but make sure its just you and her at first..so that you dont embarras her..
Reply:Repeat after me: %26quot;Hmm, well, (future mother-in-law), I hear and appreciate what you are saying. I prefer this particular (song, dress, caterer).%26quot; or %26quot;Wow (future mother-in-law) I hadn%26#039;t thought of that. Thanks for your input. I%26#039;ll consider it.%26quot;

Make sure you have backup - your maid of honor, friend or mother should be with you to reinforce your choices and support you.

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD YOU DRAG YOUR FUTURE HUSBAND INTO THIS!
Reply:I would lay the guilt on her. Just say remember how much you wished you could have done more to plan for your own wedding, well, fiance and I want to have that kind of fun too. I appreaciate all of your help, but honestly, we want to do more of this for ourselves.

This is the problem when you allow someone else to pay for things. They also feel entitled to give their opinion because its their money.
Reply:You need to sit her down and say %26quot;Remember when you said that you want this weeding to be about me? Well, I feel that maybe we%26#039;ve drifted away from that. I know you didn%26#039;t get to have the wedding you wanted, but it seems to me that right now, I might not get the wedding I want, either. I know you%26#039;re just trying to be helpful, but I thought we agreed that I would get the final say. I don%26#039;t want you to feel like you%26#039;re not needed, because you are, and I appreciate everything you%26#039;re doing, but I also feel like I%26#039;m getting less input into what I want for my special day.%26quot;

If you make it sound like these are your thoughts and if you don%26#039;t accuse her of anything, she should probably take it alright. Hopefully she will be a grownup about it and back off on the %26quot;bridezilla%26quot; that she obviously didn%26#039;t get to do for her own wedding.

Congratulations and good luck!

Edit: I have to agree with the first poster. Don%26#039;t drag your hubby into this. You don%26#039;t want to put him in the position where he has to pick between his mother and his bride. This is something you and she can work out together, without putting him in the middle.
Reply:I have a feeling this wedding is only the beginning of your problems. Time for you and Mr. Groomie to take a stand together. If he does not back you and take a united stand now, he never will. This would not have a good outcome for the longevity of your marriage. Best of Luck, you are going to need it.
Reply:From my own MIL and wedding experiences, I think that you should do your very best to keep her happy. I didn%26#039;t with my MIL and now I regret it because our relationship is strained and it has put a lot of stress on my husband. So, even when she is being crazy, try your best to keep it friendly.

But even with that being said, if you are paying for the dress, then she has no business telling you what to buy. I would do what you want with that. Ironic isn%26#039;t it, that she yells at you about being mature? Since when is yelling at your future daughter-in-law mature?
Reply:I would sit her down and tell her that although you appreciate all the contributions that she has made for your big day, it is still YOUR day (well and your future husbands of course!). Explain to her that you have been waiting for this day for a long time, and that you have been looking forward to the planning. It sounds like she is doing exactly what was done to her when she got married!! As far as the dress goes....buy it!!! Yes, you only get to wear it once, which is all the more reason to get what you want! Unless you are putting you and your new husband into overwhelming debt, there is no reason why you shouldn%26#039;t splurge a bit. Hope this helps. Congrats!
