Tulips are dying?

I purchased some tulips in pots from Lowe%26#039;s this spring. I planted them in a south facing flower bed that has red lava rocks on top to keep the weeds down. I planted them at least 6%26quot; deep; however, the holes that I dug contained a lot of the red lava rocks (the old home owners must have put several layers of rocks down). Now my tulips are yellow and wilting. Some had blooms in the pots but they now look dead. What%26#039;s going on?

Tulips are dying?
I think it%26#039;s the end of tulip season. All mine are spent.
Reply:If the rocks are keeping the soil from surrounding the bulbs, they could be drying out. You may need to dig them and fill the holes with potting soil minus the rocks, or possibly the tulips have run their course and are dying back for the summer.
Reply:Is %26#039;tulip-season%26quot; over where you live? I am in north-west Ohio and mine are all dead and the leaves are turning brown. This happens. Tulips only bloom once per season and then the leaves wilt and turn brown. DO NOT CUT THE LEAVES OFF! The leaves need to die on their own to pull in enough nutrients for the bulbs to store to grow next spring. Many people make this mistake-they think the flowers are gone so they cut the leaves off.

If everyone else has their tulips still blooing strong, my guess would be that there is too much rock present and the roots are having a hard time getting established.
