How often should a lawn be watered by a sprinkler system?

all other tips would be helpful, i purchased a home with professional landscaping that has a beautiful lawn, trees, shrubs, flowers and comes with a sprinkler system, i don’t know the first thing about landscape or gardens

How often should a lawn be watered by a sprinkler system?
A lawn needs one inch of water per week. The next time you sprinkle put out a clean soup can and time how long it takes to accumulate one inch of water in the can. For your system that is the amount of time the lawn needs per week. So if it took 40 minutes you should sprinkle for 40 min a week, unless nature helps you out.

I usually recommend breaking the 40 minutes into 2 sessions 3 or 4 days apart. That way the moisture content is more stable--and if nature does help, you don%26#039;t end up wasting water by putting an inch on top of what nature does.
Reply:Depends on a lot of things, Area, Shade, Soil Type, Rain. Most lawns at this time of the year only require about 15-20 minutes per station once a week if it doesn%26#039;t rain. If when you walk on the lawn and its sounds crunchy or the leaf blades are folded up you need to water.
Reply:Once a week for twenty minutes a station...depending on where you are. If you are in a rainy climate....less. If you are in a hot dry area,,,,,more. Don%26#039;t run it everyday or every other day. That%26#039;s not necessary. You%26#039;ll be wasting water. They only need enough to survive, not drowned.
Reply:Depends on where you live, how often it rains where you live, heat, what winter is like in your area, etc....

A general rule of thumb is that it only needs to be watered once or twice a week, for about 15 to 20 minutes per station.

I live in So. Cal, and I water during the warm months 3 times a week, for 15 minutes per station. And during the cooler seasons, like from right now until next April or May, I%26#039;ll be cutting it down to twice weekly, for 15 minutes. If you live in an area where it is common to have the thermometer dip below freezing often in the winter, consider spreading some annual ryegrass soon, and water just as often, twice a week, 15 minutes per station.

But like I said, it really depends on where you live, what zone you live in.
Reply:once a day, or every other day. Make sure that you turn them on at no earlier then dusk, that way the water does not evaporate from the ground. If you are looking to install a sprinkler system, do it yourself, it is easily done with pvc pipes and sprinklers from Lowe%26#039;s or Home Depot. Just takes a bit of time to dig the trenches
