Bromeliads...cut off the old flower or no?

At the beginning of the summer I purchased a Bromeliads plant from Wal*Mart because I was intreged by its flower growing from the middle. I loved when it blossomed and now I am unsure what do do with the flower%26#039;s stalk...do I leave it or do I cut it off?

Bromeliads...cut off the old flower or no?
Whatever is more aesthetically pleasing to you.

Unless your plant has new %26quot;babies%26quot; growing from the base, it will die anyway. In case it does have them, keep it in a cool place over the winter, water sparingly and feed again next spring. That works with nearly all bromeliads.
Reply:DO NOT keep it in a cool place, it is a tropical plant.

By all means, cut the old flower stalk off when it is dried up and dead looking.

Continue to water - and feed 20.20.20 now and then.

You should already notice small plantlets sprouting from the base?

It takes quite awhile, as in a year or longer, before the parent plant may die. Enjoy.
Reply:Once it is past it%26#039;s prime cut off the old flower. No use using it%26#039;s strength that can be going into growing little ones.Try to mist it heavy every day with distilled water, enough to fill it%26#039;s little leaf pockets, and keep it in a warm place. The more bright light the better. But preferably not direct sunlight. It takes awhile for the young one to grow but it%26#039;s worth it. They are even nice when they are not blooming.
Reply:Prune the dead/dying flower spike. Once a bromeliad flowers, it will slowly die, reproducing via suckers that appear at the base of the mother plant.
